I have seen many units that are not even screwed fast. If the window air conditioner is just there balancing in the window frame it becomes very inviting for a unexpected guest. The window air conditioner is also very inefficient. These units use more power per BTU of cooling than any other type of air conditioner. If you are a light sleeper than chances are you will not want one of these window shakers. Window air conditioners are one of the loudest forms of air conditioning. The blower for these units is very loud when running. Then add the noise of the compressor and you have enough decibels to keep many people wide awake all night long.
A wall with simple sheet type siding may be only 6 inches thick whereas a brick or stone wall can be much thicker. So wall air conditioner sleeves have ventilation louvers only in the back to avoid louvers being covered by the wall edges. This limits the amount of ventilation space available in turn limiting how powerful the unit can be. Wall air conditioners generally dont get much over 14000 BTU depending on the brand. So are they interchangeable? This question usually arises when someone needs a lot of cooling power in a room without suitable windows for a window unit.
The most commonly used air conditioners are window air conditioners. This is due mostly to the fact that they are the cheapest alternative when it comes to cooling our homes. But there are other reasons also. For example they install in a window out of the way. Install it and forget it. These units are also available with electric heat options. Window air conditioners were once so noisy that they were nicknamed window bangers. This term was very accurate and well deserved. However todays window air conditioners are very different from the ones many of us learned to hate.
The back the part that hangs outside should have the vents where water will drip out. Carefully place it on the window sill facing the right way. There should be ridges around the perimeter of the air conditioner to show you where it should line up with the window. Once you have this lined up slide open the side panels. These are designed to fill up the rest of the window that the device does not fill. Slide them as tightly over as you can. Have the top sash of the window lowered carefully and slowly down until it comes into firm contact with the top of the conditioner. The frame should be very tight against it to brace it and keep it from falling.
