Window air conditioners come in various sizes and it is important to choose the one that best fits the size of your room and needs of the user. The first thing to consider is to the rooms size. For the average 150-250 square foot room youll need a climate control unit that has a capacity of 6000 BTUs. If you have rooms that flow into one another with archways or open doorways youll need to include the square footage of the adjoining room when calculating the capacity necessary to cool the area. Outside of square footage it is important to consider the climate of the room you wish to cool with an air conditioner.
Window air conditioners came to the market as a solution for people who couldnt afford or did not want central air conditioning. Because central air conditioning can be quite expensive and because many people live in small apartments central air is not for everyone. This led to the advent of window air conditioners. Window air conditioners have a hot coil and a chilled coil along with two fans. The fans blow air over these coils and they in turn suck away the heat and humidity from the room into the outside area providing clean cool air. Another huge improvement in window air conditioners is in their appearance. Older models did not blend in very well with their surroundings. They were usually some shade of brown and looked like there was a box in your window. Window air conditioners today are much less obtrusive and look less like boxes. Corners are rounded and colors are much lighter. This gives them a much sleeker look. As with most things once they have been around for awhile cost become more reasonable and less of an obstacle. A window air conditioner can be purchase for less than two hundred dollars and often not much more than one hundred dollars. Of course this is for smaller units. Costs go up as the cooling capacity of the unit increases.
