The most popular brands of window air conditioners in the US are General Electric LG and Friedrich. You can find these units at various big-box retail stores like Best Buy or Sears as well as at online at merchants like Amazon. The cost of window units varies widely depending primarily on how many BTUs you need. The smallest units can be as well as $180 with the larger units running up to $500. In some climates Summer months can be downright unbearable without an air conditioner. Window A/Cs are less expensive than central air cooling systems and they typically use less energy than whole house systems as well.
You can not block the air conditioner with curtains for example; otherwise the comfort will be created between the window and curtains but not in the room. Less effective in a larger room. Sometimes price is much the same as of the split-system. One must admit window air conditioners design more compact and reliable compared to split-system. Window air conditioning system consists of a single case. This so-called monoblock is mounted into the window opening or wall. The conditioner case is a big box assembled from metal plastic panels of white gray light brown or other pastel colors. All the filling of indoor and outdoor units of split-system (evaporator condenser compressor fan etc.) is inside the case. There are no any external connecting tubes.
The answer is It depends on the wall thickness. Sleeve specifications for some window air conditioner manufacturers include the maximum wall thickness before it will cover part of the louvers. For example Amanas 18000 BTU models have a max of 8.5 inches. If the wall thickness is at or below that these models can be used in as a wall air conditioner without adversely affecting function. So whats the problem if the wall covers a little of the louvers? Two things: 1) restriction of air movement and therefore reduced efficiency and 2) these units pull air in very powerfully. Cut wall edges could become loose allowing material to be sucked into the unit and potentially causing damage.
