Window air conditioners came to the market as a solution for people who couldnt afford or did not want central air conditioning. Because central air conditioning can be quite expensive and because many people live in small apartments central air is not for everyone. This led to the advent of window air conditioners. Window air conditioners have a hot coil and a chilled coil along with two fans. The fans blow air over these coils and they in turn suck away the heat and humidity from the room into the outside area providing clean cool air. The capacity of an air conditioner is measured in BTUs. So the size of the air conditioner plays a vital role in determining its cooling capacity.
Installing Your New Air Conditioner. Before you remove your new A/C from its packaging youll need to recruit a helper. Air conditioners are very hard to grip because their weight is uneven and dropping the unit from a window could be catastrophic. After you find a friend or family neighbor to help you can begin the installation by installing any mounting brackets that have been provided by the manufacturer. Heavy older units typically come with mounting brackets that help to support the A/C unit using the window sill and outer wall as balancing points. Next attach any extenders that come with your air conditioner.
Have everything ready and laid out before you have unpacked. Have the screen removed from the window. Remember that these only work for windows that can be pulled up. Ones that crank out will not open wide enough nor will they have anything to hold the air conditioner steady. Open up the window as wide as it can go to give yourself a little extra room to work. It is helpful if you have someone there to push down the top sash when the time comes. Make sure the air conditioner is facing the right way. The front which should be inside the room should have the dials and the cord to plug into the wall.
