To help make that decision more clear I will explore some of the positives and negatives of the two major options. Ductless split type units are also becoming more of an option. I will do another article on that option. To include that in this article would just be more confusing. So for now we will just look at window air conditioners and central air conditioning. Central air conditioning is the best way to go if you already have a central hot air heating system already installed in your house or building. The advantage that you have is that you already have the air handler or blower part already installed.
There are other bells and whistles that are available on units these days. These can include features like dehumidifiers to remove moisture from the air and antibacterial filters which can remove odors and bacteria. A final issue to consider if you are looking to buy window air conditioner is what sorts of energy saving features the unit might have. You may consider looking for a unit that has an Energy-Star rating. The EPA assigns an Energy-Star rating to air conditioners that meet certain standards for being cost-effective and guaranteeing energy savings. This can help keep your electricity bills and check even during the hottest days of summer.
The main aspect in the choice of window air conditioner is its cool air performance. You can approximate the required power at the rate of 1 kW per 10 sq.m. with a ceiling height of 2.8 - 3 meters; for household models the characteristic is: from 1.5 - 2 to 6.5 - 8.5 kW. If there is a large glass area in the room windows face south or there are other additional heat inputs one should better buy a model with a power reserve of 15-20%. Another important factor in choosing window air conditioner is room functionality. For example air conditioner installed in the kitchen must be of high performance to provide optimal heat control. Air conditioning unit for bedrooms should have low noise characteristics.
Side panels fill the gaps on the sides. These are also very thin so most of the sleeve is uncovered and outside. So window A/Cs can be effective for very large rooms. In contrast a wall air conditioner sleeve is designed for a hole through the wall. Walls vary substantially in thickness.
