If you already have a window air conditioning unit and you have noticed recently that it seems to be louder there are few steps you should take. Check to see if the unit is vibrating on the windowsill. It may need to be re-tightened on its shelf. The side panels might also be loose. Inspect those to see if they need tightening. If the unit seems to be vibrating more than normal consider sliding a piece of wood under the unit to secure it. When purchasing a window air conditioner it is very important to purchase one with the proper cooling capacity. An air conditioner that is not properly sized will not work as efficiently as one that is sized properly. This is one of the most common mistakes made when selecting air conditioners. Use an air conditioner size calculator to select the proper sized unit for the room you want to cool. Undersized air conditioners will run continuously and not cool the space adequately and an oversized unit will cycle on and off too often. This increases equipment wear and can actually cause fuses to fail.
The most popular brands of window air conditioners in the US are General Electric LG and Friedrich. You can find these units at various big-box retail stores like Best Buy or Sears as well as at online at merchants like Amazon. The cost of window units varies widely depending primarily on how many BTUs you need. The smallest units can be as well as $180 with the larger units running up to $500. In some climates Summer months can be downright unbearable without an air conditioner. Window A/Cs are less expensive than central air cooling systems and they typically use less energy than whole house systems as well.
Window units of today are very quiet and their efficiency has improved a lot also. In fact these units are so quiet that you can hardly even hear them operating. Window air conditioners have the same components as a central air conditioner but they are all installed in small cabinet. The biggest and most important difference is that they dont have to cooling capacity of central units. But they also dont cost as much to operate either. If you only want to cool one or two rooms then window air conditioners are a perfect choice. However if you want to cool your entire home a central air conditioner is the best alternative.
