Window AC / September 14, 2018 / Aubrette Dumoulin.
Have everything ready and laid out before you have unpacked. Have the screen removed from the window. Remember that these only work for windows that can be pulled up. Ones that crank out will not open wide enough nor will they have anything to hold the air conditioner steady. Open up the window as wide as it can go to give yourself a little extra room to work. It is helpful if you have someone there to push down the top sash when the time comes. Make sure the air conditioner is facing the right way. The front which should be inside the room should have the dials and the cord to plug into the wall.
So what you should do? The best thing to do is to check out the sound levels on your window unit before you make your purchase. All air conditioners come with labels specifying the decibels generated by the unit. A high number means a loud machine. For example a unit with a rating of 50 Decibels is 10 times louder than one rated 40 Decibels. The smartest thing to do is to go to a big box store like Target or Walmart and listen to an air conditioner before you buy it. Even if you are looking at a different brand it is important to get a sense of how loud the Decibel ratings are for you. You can do this best by listening to different ac units running.
Depending on the size and level of insulation of your home one window air conditioner is typically enough to cool one or two rooms but larger units may even be able to cool an entire 2-3 bedroom apartment. Using multiple cooling units in a home will allow each person in the family to keep their room at the temperature they desire. Installing a cooling unit will take anywhere from ten to forty minutes. Choosing the Right Air Conditioner
If you choose to use a window air conditioner than you should also look for a place that it can be secured and placed in a room that you will not be sleeping in. As you can tell by now I am not a big fan of window air conditioners. They do have a place for some people. However you do need to be aware of the problems that you may encounter with them. The low initial cost can be offset by the fact that they typically do not last as long as a central air conditioner. Central air conditioning will last much longer be quieter during operation be more efficient be more secure but the initial cost will be higher.
