Window AC / September 23, 2018 / DixieLemieux
Why are window air conditioners so loud? Well the reason is simple: because the entire air conditioner - the compressor the condenser and the fans - are all located in one single unit. By contrast with a split ac and a central air conditioner the compressor and condenser are installed outside of your home. That means that in those units the loudest parts arent in your home. With a window unit however the noisiest parts of the unit are inside your home. This can be a minor annoyance. It may mean that you have to turn up the volume on the tv to hear it. But it can also mean sleepless nights if your window air conditioner in your bedroom is deafening.
The main aspect in the choice of window air conditioner is its cool air performance. You can approximate the required power at the rate of 1 kW per 10 sq.m. with a ceiling height of 2.8 - 3 meters; for household models the characteristic is: from 1.5 - 2 to 6.5 - 8.5 kW. If there is a large glass area in the room windows face south or there are other additional heat inputs one should better buy a model with a power reserve of 15-20%. Another important factor in choosing window air conditioner is room functionality. For example air conditioner installed in the kitchen must be of high performance to provide optimal heat control. Air conditioning unit for bedrooms should have low noise characteristics.
A window air conditioner in my opinion is a last resort for air conditioning your house or building. There are many down sides to window air conditioning units. There are two good things that window air conditioners have going for them. They are very inexpensive when it comes to cost per BTU of cooling. They also install very quickly and easily. That is where the good part of them ends. Window air conditioners are security risks. If a thief wants to get into your house the thin sheet metal box that holds the unit in the window can easily be pulled apart to get in through the window.
